CDHR, CACOL DISCUSSES INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AND PARTICIPATORY GOVERNANCE IN LAGOS STATE; AWARDS EMINENT NIGERIANS.

The Committee For The Defence Of Human Rights (CDHR) in collaboration with Centre For Anti- Corruption and Open Leadership (  CACOL)  held it's tenth  edition of the Citizens Accountability and Rights Forum (CARF) recently in Lagos with the theme   "Efficient Information Dissemination As A Veritable Tool For Effective Participatory Governance in Lagos  State". The president of CDHR and Chairman CACOL   Debo Adeniran stated in his opening remarks.

         Efficient information dissemination ensures that citizens are well-informed about government policies, decisions, and actions. It bridges the gap between the government and the governed, fostering trust, transparency, and inclusivity in decision-making processes. Participatory governance thrives on this interaction, as informed citizens are better equipped to contribute meaningfully to societal development. 

 Efficient information dissemination is foundational to participatory governance. He  noted that government must prioritize transparent, accessible, and inclusive communication strategies to empower citizens and foster trust. Addressing challenges such as the digital divide, fake news and misinformation which  is critical for creating a well-informed populace that actively contributes to governance and societal progress.

    He further stated that  the idea of focusing on the state government’s policies and activities and gathering people to discuss it, is anchored on  the determination to ensure that the common man on the street is not left behind by government policies and encourage an all-embracing, all-inclusive implementation of government’s policies so as to enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the people of the State. 

  The  Lagos state commissioner for information and strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso commended the efforts of CDHR and CACOL  during the  discussion that Citizens and Accountability Forum  has  been a   platform that continuously promotes participatory governance  which is very vital to  democracy.

             

  In  his keynote address  at the event he  described information dissemination as not being  a mere  tool  but rather a catalyst for transparency, Accountability, and inclusivity in govervance.He stated that well informed citizens are in  better position to  contribute to good governance , engage with the government and participate actively in the democratic process willingly and meaningfully. 

He laid emphasis   on effective communication as  being important to trust building and inclusive  governance hence the government has integrated information dissemination into the core of Lagos state governing strategy through a blend of traditional and digital platforms 

    Honourable Omotoso further said that various platforms has been introduced in order to keep enhancing inclusivity and accessibility.These includes Citizen's Gate App, toll free lines, and state government social media platforms which allows citizens to have access to information and also gives room for opinion expression and feedbacks through these various platforms.

   The commissioner also highlighted some  initiatives such as Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme  , Ounje Eko, Ibile campaign amongst others which he categorised  under social protection programmes.

   He stated that Lagos State Government has ensured live streaming of updates on its   projects and programs through the social media platforms.He further said that the state is committed to enhancing digital penetration through expansion of internet  access by laying fibre optic cables and provision of digital tools as well.

       The commissioner urged everyone to " build a Lagos where transparency, Accountability and inclusivity are not mere aspirations  but lived realities". 

 He promised to collaborate with CACOL, CDHR  and other civil societies including educational institutions to deepen  Citizen's understanding of  governance and its

 processes including their roles in participatory democracy.

   During the programme the efforts of some eminent Nigerians and a corporate body that have played significant roles   were appreciated and recognized with various awards presented to them by the organizers of the programme .
